Crowns and Bridges

What is a crown?

A crown covers a natural tooth that is broken providing the necessary strength to restore its necessary function. A crown can also correct discoloration and misshapen teeth. Crowns are fabricated from various materials, with all-ceramic crowns being the most esthetic due to its lack of a dark metal core, eliminating the dark margin that can be visible where the crown emerges from the gum tissue.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge spans the space where teeth are missing. The bridge is cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth. These teeth are called abutments and they serve as anchors for the bridge. The replacement tooth, called a pontic, is attached to the crowns that are cemented to the abutments.

How are crowns and bridges made?

Two visits to the practice are necessary to have a crown or bridge placed. During the initial visit, an adequate amount of tooth structure is removed to support a new crown or bridge. The amount of tooth structure that is removed ensures that the crown or bridge will be strong enough to withstand chewing forces. An impression is made of the prepared tooth/teeth and sent to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of the crown or bridge. A temporary crown or bridge is cemented at the end of the initial visit. At the second visit, the temporary is removed and the permanent crown or bridge is cemented.
