Veneers

What are dental veneers?

A veneer restores the look and function of a tooth. Veneers cover the visible, front surfaces of teeth with a custom-made, tooth-colored porcelain or ceramic overlay. Typically, the application of a veneer is performed in a single office visit. With proper care and optimal dental hygiene techniques, a veneer can last roughly five to 10 years.

When can veneers treat?

A veneer is frequently used to address:

  • Stained or discolored teeth
  • Worn down, uneven, chipped, or broken teeth
  • Misaligned or abnormally shaped teeth

Veneers can also be used to fill gaps between teeth which are otherwise in good shape.

What happens during the procedure?

After a comprehensive exam of the person’s teeth, gums, and bone structure, the dentist will detail the treatment options with each patient and answer any questions the person may have.

If veneers are a good option for the patient, the dentist will:

  • Apply a local anesthetic to the area where the tooth is located.
  • Then, the dentist will shave down a small layer of enamel from the front of the tooth. This makes room for the veneer.
  • 3D imaging is then used to create impressions and the veneer will be made to these requirements.
  • The tooth’s prepared surface will be cleaned and the veneer will be adhere to it with a bonding agent.
  • Lastly, a special light is directed at the veneer to harden it.

What is better veneers or cosmetic bonding?

Both cosmetic bonding and veneers have separate advantages. Cosmetic bonding is known for the fact that it can be performed in one dental visit and it is less costly. However, the resins used are not as durable as the materials used for veneers. This makes cosmetic bonding more susceptible to harm. Patients commonly chose veneers since they are extremely natural-looking and strong. To decide what option is best, contact the office to schedule an appointment. Dr. Kwon will go over the options with each patient in addition to the benefits of each treatment and together you will choose an option.
